Step by Step Guide: MySpace Editors

If your eyes are beginning to glaze over at the very mention of HTML, another option is to use the MySpace Editor.

If you point your browser to www.google.com and type the words “myspace editor” you’ll find countless MySpace editor web sites.These editors allow you to customize certain elements of your profile, simply by filling in certain fields on a web page.The web page then generates code that you place into your profile (as shown previously). I wouldn’t exactly say that using a MySpace editor is hacking, but such editors can be fun and
they are a quick way to get results, which is why they’re mentioned here.

At MySpaceEditor.org, you will see that there are a number of fields in which you can enter values, including the background color, table color, border width (of each section of your profile), border style, font family, font color, font size, and link color.

Clicking the artist’s palette icon to the side of fields that require a color selection brings up a palette, which enables you to select the color you want (very convenient if you’re not familiar with the color codes).

Once you’ve made your selections, select Preview MySpace Code and you are shown how your
MySpace profile will appear.

The final step is to click “Get this code”, which brings up a screen with a text box containing the CSS code that you will need to paste into you profile.

Now it’s simply a matter of clicking on and moving your cursor over the text box, clicking your left mouse button, and copying the text by pressing Ctrl+C. Go back to the Editing Interests and Personality section of MySpace, and paste (Ctrl+V) the code into the About Me section, as described on the preceding pages.

When you view your profile you’ll notice the colors, borders, and font you specified have taken effect. If you want to make changes, simply go back to MySpaceEditor.org (or any other similar editor) and go through the process again, copying your new code over the code you’ve already placed in your profile.

While editors make it very easy for you to start changing the look of your profile, they do have serious limitations.The first is that you can change only certain parts of the profile.There is little leeway for you to be creative, and because everyone else has easy access to MySpace editors (in the same way that you do) you’re not really going to be able to create something special.

Second, there’s usually some kind of advertisement that comes with the code that appears in your profile.The suppliers of the editors would argue that this is a fair price to pay for the use of the editor.While this is generally very easy to remove — in the example given this is simply a matter of removing the last section of code — the advertisement is, in effect, part of the transaction.While the legal requirement for your profile to carry the advertisement is tenuous, there is certainly a moral requirement — you did use their editor after all.

MySpace editors are good for coming up with something quickly and easily, but if you want true customization, you’ll need to come to grips with at least a little HTML and CSS.

While there’s no obvious place to insert HTML and CSS into your MySpace profile, most HTML and CSS code will work if placed in the Interests and Personality section of your MySpace profile.

Trying out some of the MySpace editors that you’ll find on the Internet is a good way to get started in MySpace customization, but you’ll quickly reach their limitations and want to develop your own code.
